What will I be doing?

The Crime Analyst (CA) I will analyze the firearms and ammunition eligibility status of applicants by utilizing criminal offenders record information and other firearms and ammunition eligibility related records using multiple systems. In addition, the CA I may process incoming firearm reports; respond to requests and issues from firearms applicants, law enforcement, criminal justice agencies, and other departments; receive, review, identify, and process applicant and firearm information; and provide oral and written correspondence to applicants. The above-described functions involve querying various databases and requesting and reviewing files. The CA I contacts state and federal criminal justice agencies, and firearms and ammunition dealers, to obtain and/or clarify information related to various firearm and/or ammunition issues or laws. The CA I will gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of California statutory codes, the criminal justice system, and regulations governing eligibility to purchase or possess firearms and/or ammunition in California.

DOJ has adopted telework for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. After an initial training period, this position may allow for some telework opportunities. All telework schedules are temporary, based on current conditions and will be re-evaluated as conditions change.

Working Conditions

Candidates may work in any of the following Bureau of Firearms (BOF) areas: Carry Concealed Weapons Program (CCW):
The CCW Program assists CCW licensing agencies by conducting the initial, renewal, and annual firearm eligibility background check submitted to DOJ for review of the applicant’s criminal and mental health history.

Armed and Prohibited Persons Unit (APPU):
The APPU conducts extensive background eligibility checks and criminal history analysis of individuals who have acquired firearms and ammunition, to determine if they are prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm and ammunition since their initial acquisition.

Firearm Reporting Team (FRT):
The FRT is responsible for analyzing criminal history information and other firearms eligibility records for individuals seeking to record firearms in their name.

Law Enforcement Release (LER):
The LER is responsible for analyzing criminal history information and other firearms eligibility records for people seeking to retrieve firearms and/or ammunition in the possession of law enforcement agencies to determine the individual’s eligibility to own or possess a firearm or ammunition.

Eligibility Clearance Unit (ECU):
The ECU is responsible for analyzing criminal history information and other firearms and ammunition related records to determine an applicant’s eligibility to own or possess firearms and/or ammunition.

Agency Notification Unit (ANU):
The ANU conducts firearms eligibility checks of individuals applying to become peace officers, public officers (e.g., custodial or transportation officers), armed security guards, or students in California Peace Officer Standards and Training certification courses. The ANU is also responsible for notifying applicant agencies when a peace officer or security guard issued a firearm becomes prohibited from owning or possessing firearms under state or federal law.

Firearms Record Review Team:
The Firearms Record Review Team processes live scans from the public for Firearms Record Review and Ammunition Record Review. The BOF’s record review process is a mechanism designed to allow individuals who have been determined to be ineligible to own or possess a firearm and/or ammunition the opportunity to review the criminal history information used by the Bureau to determine their eligibility.

The CA I should have a general knowledge and understanding of, or ability to, effectively learn and retain California statutory codes, the criminal justice system, and regulations governing eligibility to purchase/possess firearms or ammunition in California.

The candidate should be able to follow oral and written instructions; analyze data; write effectively; have experience working with various database systems; and possess good verbal expression and attention to detail. The candidate should also  possess the ability to work well under pressure; meet short deadlines; be dependable; and demonstrate good work habits.
